Another fantastic 3-Day Small Chair Upholstery Workshop
I have just returned from an upholstery workshop in Flowery Branch Georgia hosted by Donna Cash of Designs by Donna. Last year Donna hosted a 2-day Slipcover Workshop and 3 of those students returned this year. Hands-on learning in a small group is a lot of fun. Each student brings a pre-approved chair to work on. One other benefit of this type of learning is you also learn from one another’s projects. Below you will find pictures of the 3-day event and see how different each students pieces were.
Pam worked on a french style chair. She has 3 more at home to complete with the skills she learned in the upholstery workshop. Pam used jute webbing and foam for her seat and was up for the challenge of having to make the perfect cut to get it right. She was still smiling when the job was done and is now ready to get the chairs at home done.
Nancy picked a pretty printed fabric for her wooden armchair. This piece had a sewn boxing for the attached seat which had zig-zag springs. Nancy was nervous but with a smile and a pair of scissors she moved forward and completed a beautiful chair. Patience and persistence are two traits you need. Nancy had lots of tacks to hammer in when she got home but she is up for the challenge!
Michele had never ever done upholstery before this class. She chose a barrel back chair which is not always an easy project. Having discussed with her what she should look for in a fabric made a world of difference in her experience. She did an awesome job and picked up the skills quickly. I think Michele has a bright future in upholstery and definitely has the knack. Michele also had the lucky fortune of hooking up with a local upholsterer for an internship. I think both her and the upholsterer will benefit from this collaboration.
Kip’s fun sense of humor and eager to work personality enabled him to complete the task. He chose a great teal animal print fabric for his Bergere chair. Kip caught on very quickly to the process of creating an attached cushion. There was a lot of double welt cord to attach with this fun Bergere chair. Making the cuts was not so scary and Kip conquered the challenge.
Donna went way out of the box for her wooden armchair. She used her son’s jacket from high school and creating a one of a kind piece which will be a surprise for her son. This project took some extra steps as deconstructing the jacket to create the fabric for her chair was the first step.
Happy is an understatement when describing Donna. She also was taking on upholstery for the first time. Talk about a great attitude and eager to learn. Donna picked a favorite chair and used a combination of fabrics for her piece. When it came to closing up the outside arms Donna proudly stated ” I hate Curve Ease”, but once she started putting on the outside arm fabric and tucking it into the curve ease she found that she had miss judged and now Loved using curve ease! We sure do get a lot of upholstery accomplished in our 3-day Small Chair Upholstery Workshops but we also have a ton of fun! Learning skills by doing has always been a great way to learn and it is no different for upholstery. You can check the website throughout the year to see if there is a workshop near you that fits into your schedule.
