Reupholster an Antique Office Chair
Finding hidden jewels is one of my favorite pastimes. And by jewels, I don’t mean gem stones.
The gem I am upholstering now is an antique office chair Bill and I found in 2014 when we were poking around Asheville, North Carolina. No matter where I am, second-hand stores seem to call my name. Antique chairs are always so fun to reupholster. It’s interesting seeing what the previous upholster did and what methods they used. When I redo them, I don’t always use the same techniques used before. This was a trip for an education event I produced, The Sewing and Upholstery Retreat.
Would you reupholster an antique office chair like this?
We drove our van from Massachusetts to Asheville, filled with supplies and samples for the upholstery classes I would teach at the retreat. The van was full, just about to the roof, with a club chair upholstery project, industrial sewing machines, and sample ottomans for students to practice tying springs.
Being the great packer that I am, I can always find room for one more piece to bring back home!
During a Facebook Live filming, I started working on reupholstering this little beauty. Of course, being someone who LOVES color, I had thought of putting different bold-colored fabrics on this antique office chair, but our viewers agreed with Bill that brown leather would be the best choice. So brown leather it is.
Below are the live episodes where I am working on this chair.
As always, you can check out our online upholstery classes, where you, too, can learn to turn those roadside treasures into showpieces for your home or, better yet, learn a skill that can earn you extra money!
