Kim and I went to a couple of flea markets Sunday, hunting for bargains. We want an island for the kitchen. I built one two year ago, from cabinets torn  out of a kitchen being remodeled. It is very nice. We had it in the down stairs kitchen. When we decided to move to the second floor of our house, my son and I brought the island to the kitchen on the second floor. What a chore.  We decided that there was no way we would ever move that island again. It works well in the second floor  kitchen. Then came Mom. Mom moved in and lives on the second floor now. So does the island that I built. Don’t get me wrong, I love having my mother living here.  It’s time to build a new island. I love re-purposing furniture.

On with the hunt. Our first stop The Rietta Flea Market (www.riettafleamarket.com), Hubbardston Ma., covers many acres and takes some time to navigate. We saw lots of interesting things but nothing we wanted for our island. Caution; when you go to a flea market concentrate on what you are looking for. It’s to easy to spend all your money on all the other things you find.

Our next stop was The Lancaster Market Place. (www.thelancastermarketplace.com) This flea market is indoors. $2 admission.  This place has all kinds of items for sale by many vendors. Looks like most of the vendors have permanent booths. Not much in the way of furniture this weekend but I”m sure that changes week to week. Very clean rest rooms and a real neat indoor diner called The Lady Lancaster.

This week we will continue our search at Douglas Auctioneers in Deerfield Ma. and the Olde Hadley Flea Market in Hadley Ma..
